Exodus 3:11-13

Moses' Excuses

In Exodus 3 and 4, Moses presents a series of five objections (or excuses) to God's call to liberate the Hebrews from Egypt.

1- "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh...?" (Exodus 3:11) • The excuse: Feeling of low self-esteem and personal inadequacy in the face of such a great task.

• God's response: "I will be with you" (Exodus 3:12) — God does not validate Moses' qualities, but guarantees His own presence.

God did not accept this excuse because He sees beyond what we can see. He sees our potential to do good and obey.

2- "What shall I say to them?" (Exodus 3:13)
• The excuse: Insecurity about the message and lack of theological knowledge or authority to represent the Creator.

• God's answer: He reveals Himself as "I AM WHO I AM" (YHWH), showing that the authority of the message emanates from the very name and divine character.

Moses did not understand the essence of the matter. That calling was not about him, but about God.

3- "Behold, they will not believe in me..." (Exodus 4:1)
• The excuse: Fear that the people of Israel and Pharaoh would reject his word and not believe that he was sent by God.

• God's answer: He grants three miraculous signs to validate the ministry:

• The staff that turns into a serpent.
• The hand that becomes leprous and is then healed.
• The water of the Nile that turns into blood when poured on the ground.

4- "Oh my Lord, I am not eloquent..." (Exodus 4:10)
• The excuse: Claiming speech difficulties, a tongue tie, or a lack of rhetorical skill to speak before authorities.
• God's response: He reminds him that He is the Creator of the human mouth and language: "Who gave man his mouth? [...] Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak" (Exodus 4:11-12).

5- "Send [the message] by whomever you send" / "Please, anyone but me!" (Exodus 4:13) • The excuse: Declared resignation and pure refusal, revealing that the problem was not a lack of ability, but resistance and unwillingness.
• God's response: God's anger is kindled against Moses. However, in His mercy, God provides Aaron, Moses' brother, to be his spokesman.
